There are a lot of health benefits to eating a plant-based diet.  Studies suggest that those who eat a plant-based diet lower their risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and other health conditions. But there's a lot of confusion about what constitutes a  plant-based diet.

What's the "deal" with plant-based? is a free webinar for anyone interested in learning about plant-based eating, the health benefits of a plant-based diet, and what nutrition science says about it. The idea for this event evolved from conversations between nutrition experts Leigh Frame, PhD, MHS, P.K. Newby, ScD, MPH, MS, and Lara Zakaria, RPh, MS CNS IFMCP.

Leigh Frame, PhD, MHS, is an assistant professor, Department of Clinical Research and Leadership, program director, Integrative Medicine Programs, and executive director, Office of Integrative Medicine and Health.  Dr. Frame brings nutrition and immunity together through clinical/translational research. She has used her wide-ranging experience in biomedical research (from wet bench to clinical research) to oversee research programs, including the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Parkinson's Disease Biomarkers Program.

P.K. Newby, ScD, MPH, MS, a nutrition science thought leader, has 25 years’ experience researching diet-related diseases; studying how people make food choices and their impact on the environment; and teaching why what we eat matters, from farm to fork. Dr. Newby's passion for nutrition stems from a life-long love affair with food, from cooking, baking, and gardening as a kid to working in the restaurant industry.

Lara Zakaria, RPh, MS CNS IFMCP, is an IFM Certified Practitioner, nutritionist, pharmacist and public health professional based in New York City.  She combines evidence-based nutrition and complementary medicine, including positive psychology, to inspire patients to use whole food, herbs and lifestyle modification to optimize their health. Her training in drug-drug and drug-nutrient interactions also gives her a unique perspective on helping patients optimize their medication and supplement programs.

During this webinar, the experts will be discussing:

• What plant-based eating is and isn't

• Why someone should consider plant-based eating

• Where the confusion about plant-based comes from
