From gluten-free to all-Paleo, GMOs to grass-fed beef, our newsfeeds abound with nutrition advice. Whether sensational headlines from the latest study or anecdotes from celebrities and food bloggers, we're bombarded with "superfoods" and "best ever" diets promising to help us lose weight, fight disease, and live longer. At the same time, we live in an over-crowded food environment that makes it easy to eat, all the time. The result is an epidemic of chronic disease amidst a culture of nutrition confusion-and copious food choices that challenge everyday eaters just trying to get a healthy meal on the table.

But the exhilarating truth is that scientists know an astounding amount about the power of food. A staggering 80% of chronic diseases are preventable through modifiable lifestyle changes, and diet is the single largest contributing factor. And we also know the secrets to eating sustainably to protect our planet.

Nutrition science thought leader P.K. Newby, ScD, MPH, MS, will give a lecture on Food and Nutrition: The Top Five Things Everyone Needs to Know from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, September 27, 2019, in Ross Hall Room 229. Dr. Newby has twenty-five years’ experience researching diet-related diseases; studying how people make food choices and their impact on the environment; and teaching why what we eat matters, from farm to fork. Dr. Newby's passion for nutrition stems from a life-long love affair with food, from cooking, baking, and gardening as a kid to working in the restaurant industry.

She was one of the “best undiscovered cooks” on ABC’s The Taste (2014-15), where she created globally-inspired, plant-based cuisine rooted in her unique Healthy Hedonism™ philosophy—and was the last woman standing with domestic goddess Nigella Lawson. She holds a doctorate from Harvard and two master’s degrees from Columbia and served on the faculties at Tufts (Research Scientist and Assistant Professor; 2001-06) Boston University (Associate Professor; 2006-12), and Harvard (Adjunct Associate Professor; 2015-19), where she was an award-winning educator. In her newest book "Food and Nutrition: What Everyone Needs to Know," she answers 134 stand-alone questions addressing "need to know" food and nutrition topics like why, when it comes to diet, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts-and one size doesn't fit all. Dr. Newby also debunks popular myths and food folklore, encouraging readers to "learn, unlearn, and relearn" the fundamentals of nutrition at the heart of a health-giving diet. Her passion for all things food shines through it all, as does her love of the power of science, technology, and engineering to help create healthier diets for ourselves, and a more sustainable future for the planet we share.

You must have a GW ID to enter the venue. The lecture will be livestreamed via WebEx for those unable to attend. Register for the webinar here.

A meet-and-greet with Dr. Newby will follow the lecture.
